Lifeguard awards

The club’s lifeguard ranks swelled further this month when 12 members obtained the Surf Lifeguard Award.
Two are Masters members and the other ten will head into U16, U19 and Open ranks. All were given praise by the examiners for their high standard of knowledge.
The most recent qualifications take the tally to 39 Surf Lifeguard awards gained since last April.

The 12 club members to obtain the award are:
Olivia Bedford, Mike Campbell, Billie Coogan, Brie Downey, Jennifer McDermott, Jo Meban, Dion Mittendorff, Harry Pearce, Zane Randell, Rachel Smith, Selena Spyve, Nick Winter-Taia.
Congratulations to all 12 candidates and also to Eddie Marukore who obtained his Instructors Award at the exam on 29 September.

Lifeguards geared for patrols at Red Beach & Pakiri

Lifeguard patrols commence on Saturday 26th October, the first day of the country’s Labour Day weekend. Patrol hours for Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are:

11:00am - 4:00pm  October, November, March, April
11:00am - 5:00pm  Months of December, January, February

On Sundays, Red Beach lifeguards with an IRB will be on the beach at 10.00 am when JuniorSurf activities get under way for 7-13 year olds. Patrolling hours may be extended on any particular day at the discretion of the patrol captain on duty.

Footnote:  Red Beach lifeguards commence patrols at Pakiri on 21st December.

Red Beach Surf Club Membership Subscriptions for the 2013-14 season need to be paid by Thursday 31st October.
If you wish to compete this summer, you need to be a financial member before you have your name entered for surf competition.  If you’re not yet paid up, please attend to this important matter before 31st October.

Puhoi to Red Beach Surf Boat Challenge on Saturday 9th November

The annual Pub to Club Surf Boat Challenge will take place on Saturday 9th November, with around 15 surf boat crews taking part.
The event, with Bryan & Pat Heron as the primary sponsor, will be raced from the Puhoi Pub to Red Beach, a distance of around 16km.
The race is open to all surf boat crews, male and female, with cash and spot prizes up for grabs in all divisions. The course is along the Puhoi River, past Wenderholm to the sea then across the ocean to Red Beach.
The registrations and briefing take place at the Puhoi River car park at 11.45 am and the first boat will get away at 12.45 pm with 2-minute intervals between boats. The entry fee is $60.00 per crew which includes the after-race BBQ and refreshments at the Red Beach clubrooms.

Red Beach Surf Club has a second day for JuniorSurf registrations on Sunday 20th October

The Red Beach Surf Club will continue taking registrations for its JuniorSurf division at the surf clubrooms, Ngapara Street, Red Beach as follows:
Date:    Sunday 20th October
Times:  10.00 am – 1.00 pm

Parents are invited to bring their children along to this second registration day to enrol them. Boys and girls aged from 5 - 13 years are eligible to join as JuniorSurf members.
Administrators will be on hand to provide information on age groups, activities, training days and surf carnival competition. Club clothing will be on sale. Activities for the JuniorSurf division will commence at Red Beach on Sunday 3rd November.

Swim foursome take gold & silver medals

Four Red Beach swimmers teamed up to collect gold and silver medals at the SLSNZ Pool Championships at Hamilton’s Te Rapa pool last weekend. The quartet of Rebecca Pearce, Hannah Williams, Kelsi Boocock and Courtney Spencer won Gold in the U19 Women’s 4 x 50m Medley Relay.
They then went on to take the Silver medal in the U19 4 x 50m Obstacle Relay.
Red Beach came away from the Championships with its best-ever result at the national event, having picked up six gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Club notches up its best-ever results from SLSNZ Pool Championships : 6 Gold, 5 Silver, 2 Bronze

Red Beach swimmers have grabbed two gold and two silver medals on the third and final day of the SLSNZ Pool Championships at Hamilton's Te Rapa pool.
The club's first win during the Sunday morning session went to the quartet of Matthew Denvir, Patrick Makgill, Jonathan Selman and Blake Readman in the U12 Men's Obstacle Relay. It was the team's second gold medal of the championships. They have also picked up a silver medal.
Hannah Williams snared Red Beach's second gold medal of the morning session, taking out the U16 women's Manikin Tow with Fins.

Red Beach Surf Club’s young swimmers have collected gold and silver medals at the SLSNZ Pool Championships at Hamilton’s Te Rapa Pool. On Friday 11th, the first day of the 3-day event, the club scooped up four golds in team events as well as three silver medals.

Seven club lifeguards obtain IRB qualifications

Red Beach Surf Club now has 5 more qualified IRB drivers for lifeguard patrols at Red Beach and Pakiri this summer.
Seven club members were at Piha Beach recently to be examined for Driver and Crewman awards. The successful candidates were:

Crewman Awards:  Chelsea Grant, Rebecca Pearce
Driver Awards: Mitchell Grant, Lauren Williams

Crewman & Driver Awards:  Craig Malyon, Bob Mellor, Caspian Smith.

Long Distance event

The Long Distance Carnival, surf life saving’s opening event on the Surf Sports programme for 2013/14, kicked off at Orewa Beach on Saturday 5th October.
Around 100 surf athletes made the most of calm conditions to check out their fitness and stamina levels. We were there to capture the action on the sand and in the water. For the full set of results, click here

Lifeguard refresher days at Red Beach

Three lifeguard refresher dates announced

Three dates have been confirmed for the club’s Lifeguard Refreshers at Red Beach. They are:

Sundays:  27th October   3rd November   10th November

All club lifeguards are required to sit the refresher test to be eligible to patrol and to compete at this summer’s surf carnivals. The refresher times are from 12 noon – 2.30 pm on each of the three days.

The most recent qualifications take the tally to 27 Surf Lifeguard awards gained since last April.

Brodie Campbell, Freya Currie, Liam Fannin, Sam Goodare, Sam Haggerty, Kate Harkin, Erin Lee, Jack Player, Brendon Rutledge-Malyon, Nicholas Thom, Brittany Vari.

Graeme says ‘thanks’

Red Beach Life Member Graeme Danks has recovered well after being struck down by a serious illness last April. His wife Janet has sent us the following …
"We would like to thank Red Beach Surf Club members and supporters for their kind wishes, messages and visits during Graeme's stay in hospital earlier this year.  He is now home and making steady progress to full fitness, which is still going to take some time.  Hopefully we will see you on the beach later in the season."
“We wish the club all the best for the coming year.”

Two Red Beach club members have been recognised by Surf Life Saving New Zealand for their services to the movement. Service Awards were presented to Serena Ball and Mark Readman at the Awards of Excellence function held recently at Wellington’s Amora Hotel.
Red Beach Surf Club extends its heartiest congratulations to you both.

SLSNR Long Distance carnival on Saturday

Runners, swimmers, paddlers & rowers to compete in season-opener at Orewa Beach, 5th October

The Long Distance Carnival at Orewa this coming Saturday will launch the 2013-14 surf sports season. 
Competitors aged from 14 years through to masters (30+) will take to the water in a variety of events.  The morning’s competition starts with a 2km beach run at 10.00 am.
Depending on ages, ski paddlers will cover either a 7.5km or 10km distance.  Board paddlers have either a 2.5km or 5km course to get around.
Swimmers are likely to opt for wetsuits to cover a 1.5km swim distance. Surf canoe paddlers have a 7.5km course to race over and surf boat rowers will compete over 10km to put their fitness to the test.
Registrations are being taken between 8.30 am and 9.30 am. The events are …

2km Beach Run - 10.00am start - followed by:
1.5km Swim        5km Board paddle (U16, 2.5km paddle)
10km Ski (U16, 7.5km ski paddle)
7.5km Canoe       10km Surf Boat

Competition Uniform:
As of 1st October 2013, High Visibility Vests are mandatory at all competitions. If you do not wear a vest you will not be allowed to compete. For more information about High Visibility Vests, click here

Footnote:  Non-qualified competitors will be required to register, sign a waiver and wear a numbered Orange cap.

King of Rangitoto event cancelled

Because of adverse weather conditions being predicted, the KING OF RANGITOTO event scheduled for Saturday 28th September has been cancelled. The forecast conditions have been deemed to be unsafe by the SLSNR Event Management Committee.  Read more ...

King of Rangitoto event this Saturday

Test of fitness across the Rangitoto channel for surf ski & canoe paddlers, surf boat rowers

(Pic) The King of Rangitoto event involves a run to the summit.

The King of Rangitoto event makes a return this Saturday 28 September. The event is open to surf ski paddlers as well as surf boat and surf canoe crews.
The course involves a 5km paddle or row from Takapuna Beach to McKenzie Bay on Rangitoto Island where all craft are beached. Then it’s a run to the Rangitoto summit and back to the craft, a distance of 7km over rugged terrain.
Boat and canoe crews need to have a minimum of two carry out the run to the summit. Competitors then complete the 5km paddle or row back to Takapuna Beach.

Registrations:  From 7.00 am – 8.30 am at Takapuna Beach.  Briefing for all competitors: 8.45 am. Race start:  9.00 am.   For more information, click here
