SLSNR points trophy back in the club’s trophy cabinet

Red Beach Surf Club’s Junior athletes have regained the Northern Region Championships points trophy following two days of competition at Orewa Beach.
The club’s young competitors put in some sparkling performances to finish the championships comfortably clear of their nearest rival.

Over 600 competitors aged from seven – 13 years, representing 14 clubs, took part in the weekend event which saw a mixed bag of weather and some challenging surf conditions. Four of the clubs were from outside the Northern region.

Red Beach, with strength in numbers over all three age divisions, claimed the overall points trophy which it last won in 2014.
“For the past 12 months we’ve been working hard to get back on top,” said Red Beach JuniorSurf chairman Dylan Turner.

“We’ve focussed on coaching resources, support crews and quality equipment for our athletes. But most of all, our focus has been community, culture and fun and I believe that this has been the cornerstone to our success this year,” he added.

In the quest for the Cath & Eddie Millar Cup which is awarded for selected events within the Championships, Orewa headed off Red Beach by a solitary point to retain the trophy.
