Red Beach has four surf boat crews entered for the popular Whangamata Surf Boat Spectacular on 2nd January.
The event doubles as Round Two of the current season’s Trillian Trust Surf Boat Series and race organisers are confident of 30 - 40 crews taking part. The growth in numbers points to a widespread interest in surf boat rowing in New Zealand.
The club will have two men’s crews, the ‘Cab Savs’ Masters who are making a return to the Bay of Plenty venue, and a newly-formed open men’s crew. Joining them will be two of the club’s three women’s crews.
The annual event features two unique types of surf boat racing, namely the 2km Dash for Cash around the island off Whangamata Beach, and the short course sprint series.
The Dash for Cash event, which carries prize money of $1,500, starts at 11.00 am. The short course sprint series gets under way at 1.00 pm.
