IRB crews had to contend with a choppy one metre surf in the recent Classic IRB Challenge held at Northland’s 90 Mile Beach.
The annual event attracted 18 crews which raced in the surf line, parallel to the beach, over the 54 mile distance from Scott’s Point to Ahipara. There were two compulsory refuelling stops for crews during the journey.
Red Beach fielded three IRB crews which included the only all-women’s crew in the race. All made it to the finish line. Providing back-up for the Red Beach lifeguards were Dean Pouwhare, Brian Maney and Vaughan Skiffington.
The event was won by the East End club from Taranaki. Four IRB’s failed to complete the course.
