Five Red Beach surf boat crews are heading for Whangamata to compete in the Surf Boat Spectacular on 2nd January.
The event doubles as Round Two of the Trillian Trust Surf Boat Series and race organisers are confident of 40 - 50 crews taking part, an all-time high. The growth in numbers points to a widespread interest in surf boat rowing in New Zealand.
Red Beach will have three men’s crews and two women’s crews on the water at the popular Bay of Plenty venue.
The annual event features two unique types of surf boat racing, namely the 2km Dash for Cash around the island off Whangamata Beach, and the short course sprint series.
The Dash for Cash event for open men’s crews starts at 10.30 am. Masters, age grades and women’s crews start together in race 2 at 11.15 am. The short course sprint series gets under way at 12.30 pm.
