Ironman double for AJ at Surf League

24th February 2009

For the second time in as many years, Alistair 'AJ' Maney, left, notched up a significant Ironman double at the recent Lion Foundation Surf League.
Competing for Northern Region’s U19 team, he was a comfortable winner of the event on both days at the Mount Maunganui venue. It gave him his fourth consecutive Ironman win in the interprovincial surf competition.
Red Beach clubmate Sam Cosgrove, right, was also outstanding for the U19 team through his swimming strengths. Both he and Maney were members of the winning Dearlove Relay team on both days of the surf league. Cosgrove scored another win when he paired with Piha’s Kirsty Wannan in the mixed tube rescue event.
After two days of competition, the Northern Region U19 team won outright with 201 points, heading off Bay of Plenty (175) and Wellington (149).
