The beach events of sprints, relays and beach flags feature prominently in surf lifesaving competition. Lifeguards who specialise in these events, preferring to sidestep the water and craft events, are affectionately known as ‘land crabs’.  On the other hand, some surf athletes are able to show a clean pair of heels across the sand.
