Red Beach lifeguards pass test with flying colours

Red Beach Surf Club now has 14 more qualified IRB drivers for lifeguard patrols at Red Beach and Pakiri this summer.
Sixteen club members were at Bethells Beach recently to be examined for Driver and Crewman awards.
“All the candidates were faced with a very messy and challenging west coast surf, and hammered by a 20 knot northerly wind,” said club powercraft manager Dean Pouwhare.
“It wasn’t the expected 3.5m surf but closer to shore it was 1.5m - 2.5m where the exam was conducted.  All the Red Beach candidates were very well trained; there were no flips and no real issues. It was one of the better run exams we’ve attended,” he added.
The successful candidates extended their thanks to Brian Maney, Mark Readman and Dean Pouwhare for providing them with the skill to take the exam in their stride.
