Rescuers up against tricky surf conditions, rips

Red Beach lifeguards rescued six people at Pakiri Beach on Saturday 30 December.
Over a period of five hours and using rescue tubes and an IRB, the lifeguards brought ashore six young swimmers who were caught in rips just outside the patrolled area. Five of those rescued were of ethnic origin.
“All the rescue situations were potentially serious,” said patrol captain Chris Gurr (right). “There was a 1m-2m surf running and the big surf over the past 10 days created channels and potholes”.
The duty patrol comprised of Jordan Curd, James Hanson, Jayden Bennett, Emma Selman, Amy Davison and Tyler McDowall.
“It was a busy day for everyone,” Chris added.
