The New Year will see six Red Beach surf boat crews heading for Whangamata to compete in the Surf Boat Spectacular on Thursday 2nd January.
The event is Round Two of the NZ Surf Boat Series and race organisers are confident of 50-60 crews taking part. Crews will race over a long course/sprint finish series in all age divisions.
Round One of the series, scheduled for Paekakariki on 30 November, was called off because of adverse weather conditions.
Racing at Whangamata will begin at 9.00 am with the NZ selection trials to pick a men’s and a women’s crew to compete in Australia in the Trans-Tasman Surf Boat Challenge in February. The Red Beach Sirens crew is in contention for selection.
Red Beach’s other crews to start at Whangamata will be the Boomers and the Cab Savs in the open men’s division, the Pirates and the Giggles in the U23 men’s and women’s divisions and Blakey's Angels in the U19 women’s division. Racing starts at 11.00 am.
