Red Beach’s surf athletes returned from the National Championships at Whakatane’s Ohope Beach with a haul of 32 medals. They collected 8 gold, 15 silver and 9 bronze medals over the three days of competition.
The club’s representation was a record 123 competitors, the largest number of the nearly 50 clubs taking part. And in the mix were seven surf boat crews – the most ever for Red Beach – and nine surf canoe crews.
In the quest for the Allan Gardner Trophy for surf lifesaving supremacy, the club finished in third place on overall points.
Red Beach’s most successful competitor was Hannah Williams who came away with seven medals. At the conclusion of the Nationals she was named for the NZ Development Squad along with Kelsi Boocock and Matt Thetford.
