Hayden John Reece
, a Red Beach Surf Club competitor in the early-1990’s, passed away peacefully in his sleep after a battle with cancer. He died on 9th June 2014, aged 52, at his home in northern New South Wales.
A New Zealander by birth, he will be remembered as one of the early stars in the Uncle Toby’s Iron man series in Australia, placing seventh in the 1990-91 series.
He first competed for Red Beach in 1992 at the NZ Championships in New Plymouth and became the first Red Beach athlete to win the NZ Iron Man title. At the same Nationals he also won the Open Surf Race and played a key role in the club’s Open Taplin win.
In 1993, at the Mt Maunganui Nationals, he won the Open Board Race, the Open Board Rescue with Jared Jackson and was a member of the winning Open Mens Surf Team.
His outstanding surf ability helped Red Beach win the Allan Gardner Trophy in both 1992 and 1993.
In 1994, at the Lyall Bay Nationals, he won three more Gold medals and at the conclusion of the championships he was selected for the New Zealand team to compete at the 1994 World Championships in Wales.
To his wife Stacy and children Tiki and Finn we extend the condolences of all Red Beach Surf Club members.
