Lyall Bay the venue for Round One of the series

Four Red Beach surf boat crews head to the capital this weekend for Round One of the NZ Surf Boat Series at Lyall Bay on Saturday 29th November.
Shane ‘Bugsy’ O’Halloran (right) will sweep three crews – the Boomers in the open men’s division, the Pirates (U23) and the Sirens (open women). Shamus O’Halloran will sweep a new crew, the Red Beach Bangers, in the open women’s division.
The event has attracted 52 crews and 248 competitors.

“The club has three experienced crews and the expectations are that they will do well,” said Bugsy.
“The Bangers crew will have their first row in a surf carnival and for them it’s as much about getting a feel for surf boat rowing as it is to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow boaties.”
“And it will be the first major outing for the club’s new Clymer boat which carries the logos for our two major boat sponsors, The Flying Herons and Argosy Property,” he added.

The event at Lyall Bay is the first of two NZ selection trials for crews to be considered for selection to compete against the Australians in the Trans-Tasman Surf Boat Challenge at Waihi in February. The second selection carnival will be at Whangamata on 2nd January.
