Over 650 athletes are set to descend on Whangamata this Saturday for the annual Whangamata Classic surf carnival.
Jointly hosted by Surf Life Saving Northern Region and SLSNZ Eastern Region, the event has attracted some of the country’s best surf athletes. Competitor numbers are up by more than 100 on last year. Red Beach has the largest contingent of competitors with 106 athletes entered.
The day’s events include surf races, ski & board races, Ironman & Diamond events, beach flags & sprints and Taplin relays. Surf boats and surf canoes will also race.
There will be two points tables running; one for Northern Region clubs and another for all the clubs participating. Points from the event count towards the Northern Region Competition Club of the Year.
