The New Year will see five Red Beach crews heading for the Whangamata Surf Boat Spectacular on Saturday 2 January.
The event is Round Two of the NZ Surf Boat Series and race organisers are confident of more than 50 crews taking part. Crews will race over a long course/sprint finish series in all age divisions.
The NZ selectors will be on hand to pick crews to compete in the Trans-Tasman Surf Boat Challenge in NSW, Australia in February. The Red Beach crews in contention for selection are the Boomers (open men) and Pirates (U23 men). Both have been impressive in their pre-Christmas racing.
“The Pirates will come up against Whangamata’s U23 crew so they’ll need to be faster and better on the day,” said boat sweep Bugsy O’Halloran.
“In the open men’s division, the top contenders are Titahi Bay, North Beach and Red Beach and they will be up against some strong crews which haven’t made an appearance so far this season,” he added.
Red Beach’s other crews to start at Whangamata will be the Bangers (open women), the Doom Squad (U23 men) and the Angels (U19 women).
Racing starts at 10.00 am.
