Club comes away from Northern Region Champs with both trophies

Awaiting the start of the U11 men's Cameron Relay at the SLSNR JuniorSurf Championships.

Perfect weather and a high standard of competition were the ideal mix for the Northern Region JuniorSurf Championships at the weekend.
Close to 400 young athletes aged 10-13 years – representing 15 clubs – assembled at Orewa Beach for the Harcourts two-day event. And with strength in numbers, Red Beach successfully defended the Northern Region Championships Trophy, amassing 134 points to finish comfortably ahead of Mairangi Bay on 106 with Orewa close behind on 101 points.
During the carnival a shark was spotted swimming close to the beach and all participants had to leave the water. After an hour's break, the beach was re-opened and the carnival continued.

The club's 97 athletes put in some sparkling performances across all age divisions to hold on to the trophy. At the same event, the club regained the Cath & Eddie Millar Cup which was last won by Red Beach in 2014.
Competition for this cup is based on specific events during the same weekend as the championships and it was a tightly fought contest right to the end. Red Beach claimed it with 49 points, with Orewa second on 43 and Mairangi Bay on 41 points.

"We've placed a lot of emphasis on quality coaching while building a strong club culture which is at an all-time high," said Red Beach JuniorSurf chairman Dylan Turner.
"Last weekend's double success has a lot to do with this culture which embraces the complete inclusion of families and children, the fun element, team spirit and community involvement which are the cornerstones of the Red Beach club," he added.
