Honours for club athletes and officials

15th July 2018

Red Beach's Patrick Makgill was a dual winner at the recent SLSNR Awards of Excellence night.
First up he took out the U16 Sportsman of the Year award for his achievements during the 2017-18 season. And, soon after the award was presented, he was joined by fellow clubmates Flynn Southcombe and Henry Williams to collect the trophy for Competition Team of the Year.

Along with Jonathan Selman, who was unable to be present for the awards ceremony, the quartet made up the highly-successful U16 Men's Pool Rescue Relay Team which broke New Zealand records at the SLSNZ Pool Championships in October 2017.

Michelle Newton, above, was also a big winner on the night, taking out the prestigious Surf Official of the Year award after fending off two other exceptionally strong contenders.

Red Beach's Wade Downey, above, who was out of the country on the night of the Awards of Excellence, was a popular winner of the coveted Instructor of the Year award. Wade became a qualified Surf Lifeguard Instructor in September 2012 and since then has seen close to 200 Red Beach lifeguards gain the award to become qualified patrol members.
