The Eastern Region surf lifesaving championships are held every summer during Auckland Anniversary weekend.
For the first time in the history of the ERCs, Gisborne’s Midway Beach will host the event from 25-27 January.
The move to Gisborne, however, has resulted in a drop in entries from the Northern Region clubs, with the distance to be travelled for a weekend carnival being cited as the main reason.
Surf boat crews have chosen not to compete at this year’s ERCs, leaving just canoe crews to take on the Midway surf in the boat & canoe arena.
The Eastern Region Championships is one of the biggest sporting events on the SLSNZ calendar and athletes from as far south as Canterbury will participate.
Fifty Red Beach athletes will take to the sand and the surf when competition kicks off on Friday 25 with a twilight carnival comprising of beach sprints, beach relays and double ski racing.
Saturday’s programme gets under way at 8.00 am with Surf Teams races, followed by Board Rescue heats and then Ski & Board Relays.
Monday - Anniversary Day - will see the country's top SLSNZ athletes return to Midway Beach for the 2019 NZ Representative Challenge.
