Red Beach’s paddling enthusiasts will be blowing away the cobwebs when they head down the Puhoi River in the annual Pub to Club event on Saturday 14 September.
Starting at 7.30 am to meet the high tide, they will set out on the 16km journey to Red Beach on skis and paddleboards and will be joined by two surf canoe crews.
A first for the Pub to Club event will be the appearance of an all-female waka crew who will be joined by an all-male crew. Six paddlers make up each crew.
Of the more than 60 club members expected to participate, around 10 of them will be Rookie lifeguards from last summer who will soon sit the Surf Lifeguard Award exam to become qualified guards.
The paddlers will be accompanied by several support boats – including two IRB crews - as they head down the river to Wenderholm and then across the ocean to Red Beach.
The event is viewed as a means to build fitness and stamina with the 2019-20 season about to kick off. The first competition outing of the summer will be the Long Distance Challenge on 19 October and will involve the rescue craft being used in the Pub to Club event.
