The keenly awaited start to the surf carnival season gets under way in earnest on Saturday 9 November with a full-day Interclub event at Waipu Cove.
Having had their first taste of competition at the Long Distance carnival in October, athletes are now ready for some fully-fledged surf action.
Last season’s Rookie members who recently became qualified lifeguards will, after Saturday’s events, remember the Cove as their very first carnival venue in Senior ranks.
Saturday’s programme features board, ski, surf race and Iron/Diamond events. Also featuring is a Mixed Taplin Relay in which teams must have a minimum of 1 x U16 competitor and a maximum of 1 x Open competitor.
And for the first time at a Senior Interclub carnival, U14 athletes – restricted to C2 – will be eligible to compete. They must be a minimum of 13 years of age and hold a 200m patch. Their inclusion is a move by administrators to achieve greater integration of the Junior & Senior divisions and prepare U14 athletes for their move into Senior ranks next summer.
Surf boat and surf canoe crews will be racing at the Northland venue and Masters competitors will also have the chance to make a splash in the Waipu surf. Except for the Taplin Relays, Masters will contest the same events as their U16, U19 and Open division counterparts.
The first event gets under way at 9.00 am.
