Red Beach Masters at the Mount Monster

20th December 2019

Red Beach fielded two Masters teams
at the recent Mount Monster event at Mt Maunganui.
The Masters' men’s team – the Mastdaz – was made up of Mark Scheib (ski), Rod Moratti (swim), Mike McDermott (board) and Darren Shand (run). It was their first-ever appearance together as a team.
The women’s team – the Red Beach Moms – comprised of Teresa Russell (ski), Jen McDermott (swim), Jes Moratti (board) and Lauren Neivandt (run).

In its seventh year, the event threw up some challenging conditions and the surf was well and truly up for the ski paddlers on the opening leg of a 12km paddle from Mt Maunganui’s Main Beach to Omanu and back. It took Teresa Russell three attempts to get out on the ski, showing amazing tenacity in the process. But as the surf got bigger, the team was unable to complete the final leg and ended the event with a DNF.

However, the Mastdaz performed well and finished in third place in the Masters’ division, recording a time of 3 hours, 3 minutes. They collected a cheque for $100 for their efforts.
