Akira Gardiner has raced away with the SLSNR U16 Sportsman of the Year trophy.
The announcement was made during the recent live streaming of the Awards of Excellence by Surf Life Saving Northern Region.
Akira, a specialist in Beach Flags, Sprints & Relays, won four Gold medals across these events at the Northern Region Championships (NRCs) at Omaha in February.
At the NZ Championships at Gisborne’s Midway Beach in March, he won a Bronze in the U16 Men’s Beach Sprint.
The award is a fitting finale to Akira’s first season as an U16 athlete. He was a member of Red Beach’s Junior Surf division for eight years before becoming a qualified lifeguard.
