The efforts of Red Beach’s Surf Lifeguard Award instructors last summer have paid dividends. The club has been awarded the Gudsell Trophy by SLSNZ for achieving more Surf Lifeguard Awards than any other club in New Zealand for the 2019-20 season. A total of 41 Red Beach candidates obtained the award, also known as the Surf Bronze Medallion.
The win was announced along with other national awards via the SLSNZ Facebook page which replaced the Awards of Excellence function at Te Papa in Wellington on Saturday 19 September, all due to Covid-19 restrictions.
It’s the fourth occasion on which Red Beach has collected the Gudsell Trophy. The club last took it out in 2012 when it achieved 49 surf lifeguard qualifications.
Prior to that, the award was won by the club in 1993. The very first occasion was in 1977 when Red Beach won it jointly with the Whakatane club. The inaugural winner of the trophy was the South Brighton club in 1956.
