The Rangitoto Challenge at the end of July kick-started a new season of competition. It’s now time for the next long-distance paddle – the annual Pub to Club event – on Saturday 10th October.
It had been scheduled to take place in August, however, another Covid-19 lockdown forced a postponement.
Starting at 2.00 pm to meet the high tide, paddlers will head down the Puhoi River on the 16km journey to Red Beach on skis and paddleboards. Joining them will be three surf canoe crews – the Flying Moanas, the Rockin' Reds, and the U19 Ratbags crew. And there’s a likelihood of three waka crews taking part.
More than 50 club members are expected to participate and some of them will be Rookie lifeguards from last summer.
The paddlers will be accompanied by five or six support boats – including two IRB crews - as they head down the river to Wenderholm and then across the ocean to Red Beach.
Wrapping up the event will be a BBQ and sausage sizzle back at the club where prizes will be presented.
The event is viewed as a means to build fitness and stamina with the 2020-21 season about to commence. The first Senior Surf interclub carnival of the summer will take place just weeks later on Saturday 7th November.
