Age Groups & Fees

JuniorSurf Age Groups

Children are trained and compete at carnivals within age groups. These are determined based on the child's age as at 30th September 2017 (for the 2017-18 season).

  • Tadpoles  -   4, 5 and 6 year olds
  • A Group   -   Under 8s, Under 9s, and Under 10s.
  • B Group   -   Under 11s and Under 12s
  • C Group   -   Under 13s and Under 14s
  • Children 14 years and over are members of the Senior Surf division of Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

200 Metre Badge

Junior Surf members (Under 9s and above) are required to attain their 200 metre badge to compete in water events at surf carnivals and club championships.

A member must confidently swim 200 metres freestyle and tread water with a hand in the air for 1 minute under a specified time in the pool and in the sea.

Every year, all members must be re-tested. The club will hold 200 metre badge sessions within the first few weeks of the season and again further into the season, if required.

The badge must be sewn on the hip part of their club swimwear so it is clearly visible at carnivals.

Children unable to attain their 200 metre badge can still compete in beach events at summer carnivals and in modified water events such as run-wade-run in order to build their confidence in the water and to encourage them to work towards attaining their 200 metre badge.

Children who do not attain their 200 metre badge may train under supervision on 8'10" foam paddle boards but cannot compete at carnivals on these boards for safety reasons.

Swimming Abilities and Expectations

It should be noted that in view of the environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that juniors have swimming proficiency.  This should increase as children progress through the age groups.

While we offer pool and sea swimming sessions with a trained instructor for A Group (Under 8s, Under 9s and Under 10s) children preparing for their 200m badge, as a club we do not provide swimming lessons.

We encourage and strongly recommend that for the children’s safety and to ensure that they receive maximum enjoyment and benefit from the surf life saving programme, parents or caregivers consider enrolment for swimming lessons with a local qualified instructor.

Junior Surf Registration Dates - 2017

Registrations take place at the Red Beach Surf Club on Sunday 17th September & Sunday 1st October 2017 from 11.00am to 2.00pm. Membership fees are collected and uniform orders are taken on these days.

Financial Responsibilities

Families contribute financially to the running of Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club in two distinct ways:  membership fees and fundraising.

The fees cover Sunday and mid-week training, selected carnivals and basic club administrative costs.  The remainder is made up with fundraising and grants, enabling the club to maintain and purchase new equipment, as well as transporting the equipment to and from carnivals.

If any family is able to assist the Junior Surf division with fundraising, either directly or by promoting us to friends, family and business associates, they can contact any of the committee for promotional material.
