Age Groups & Fees

AGE GROUPS FOR THE JUNIORSURF DIVISION

Children are trained and compete at carnivals within age groups. The group that a child participates in is based on the child's age as at 30th September.
  • Tadpoles  -   5 and 6 year olds
  • A Group   -   7, 8 and 9 year olds
  • B Group   -   10 and 11 year olds
  • C Group   -   12 and 13 year olds
  • Children 14 years and over are members of the SeniorSurf division of  Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

200 Metre Badge

To gain the 200 metre badge, which is required to compete in water events at surf carnivals, an individual must swim 200 metres freestyle and tread water with a hand in the air for one minute in under 10 minutes in the sea (dependent upon surf conditions). The JuniorSurf Division will hold 200 metre badge trials within the first few weeks of the season and again further into the season.

All children, with the exception of Tadpoles, are expected to compete at surf carnivals.  Some of the early carnivals are non-competitive with the main aim being to gain confidence and Surf Sport experience.

Children unable to attain their 200 metre badge can still compete in some specified beach events at summer carnivals.

Swimming Abilities and Expectations

There is no requirement for our JuniorSurf members to be strong swimmers.  It should be noted that in view of the environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that they do have some swimming proficiency.  This should increase as children progress through the age groups.

We encourage and strongly recommend that for the children’s safety and to ensure that they receive maximum enjoyment and benefits from the programme, parents or caregivers consider, where necessary, enrolment for swimming lessons with a local qualified instructor.

The club runs a winter swim programme that suits most abilities.  Interested parties should contact their coach, swim co-ordinator or a committee member for further information.

JuniorSurf Registrations

Registrations take place at the Red Beach Surf Clubrooms on the two Sundays prior to Labour Weekend from 10am to 1pm.   For the 2008-2009 season  the registration dates are 12th and 19th October.  Membership fees are collected on that day and uniform orders are taken.

Financial Responsibilities

Families contribute financially to the running of Red Beach Surf Lifesaving Club in two distinct ways:  membership fees and fundraising.  The fees cover Sunday and mid-week training, selected carnivals and basic club administrative costs.  The remainder is made up with fundraising and grants, enabling the club to maintain and purchase new equipment, as well as transporting the equipment to and from carnivals.

If any family is able to assist the JuniorSurf division with our fundraising, either directly or by promoting us to friends, family and business associates, they can contact club chairman Edwin Richards for promotional material.

Fundraising

Fundraising is essential to the club and provides an opportunity for all families to help support their children’s surf life saving activities.  Your ideas and involvement in organising and running fundraising events is always appreciated.  Helping with our weekly sausage sizzle on training days is one example of how every family can contribute to the club.  Please contact any committee member with your valuable suggestions and offers of help, they are always welcome!

Sponsorship

Sponsorship is one of the major providers of funding. The JuniorSurf division is always searching for partners in this area.  Sponsorship is welcomed in many ways, from printing and IT, monetary donations for the purchase of equipment, clothing, rescue tubes, fins through to sponsoring boards.  All equipment sponsored is able to be signwritten with a sponsor's name, logo and colours if applicable.  If you are able to assist or have contacts, please speak with a member of the committee to obtain promotional material.
