THE ROOKIE LIFEGUARD PROGRAMME 2006/2007

The Rookie Lifeguard Programme was introduced into Surf Life Saving Northern Region (SLSNR) in 2000/2001 to assist with the education and retention of young surf lifesavers aged 12-13 years through a structured development programme. This programme opens the way to becoming active surf lifeguards when they turn 14, with their goal being to achieve the Surf Lifeguard Award and become qualified lifeguards.

To enter the Rookie Programme each individual is nominated by their club. During the season each Rookie Lifeguard is asked to complete 20 hours of patrolling time alongside a mentor. The Rookies also complete a series of modules in their work books under the guidance of a Rookie co-ordinator.

At the end of each season, surf clubs take part in the Rookie Challenge, run by SLSNR, to find the top club team.

Last season, Red Beach Surf Club had 2 teams entered into the programme, with the Red Beach 'A' team winning the event for the very first time.  The 'B' team placed 7th out of the 16 teams entered.

The club's Rookies are well on their way to becoming highly qualified lifeguards, ready to patrol at Red Beach this summer. There will be another group of enthusiastic recruits raring to go with the start of the new season in October.

RED BEACH MAKE IT SIX IN A ROW

Red Beach Juniors made it six in a row by taking out the Cath and Eddie Millar Cup at Waipu on Sunday 25 March 2007. A strong on-shore breeze and a 1.5 – 2 metre swell created challenging conditions for all eight clubs competing. All of the teams need to be commended for their gutsy efforts, never giving up.

There were highs and lows throughout the day, making it a very exciting competition. The Red Beach team members weren’t overawed and worked hard in the testing conditions, taking on board advice given by their coaches. It was a day where true grit and determination got everyone through in the end.

The Red Beach B and C Groups won their age groups, dominating land and water events. The results didn’t always go A groups way, but the team's determination saw them end up a creditable third.

Nevertheless, it was a convincing overall win for Red Beach, retaining the trophy by a margin of 33 points ahead of Mairangi Bay and Orewa.

Red Beach will be back in 2008 hoping to continue their winning streak and make it a lucky seven in a row!
