Surf boat rowing in New Zealand is on a roll, judging by the spectacular increase in entries in the Trillian surf boat series.
A record 36 crews are entered for Round One of the series in Wellington this weekend.
The open men’s division will be fought out by 20 crews, while eight crews in each of the open women’s and under-21 divisions will battle it out in the capital.
Racing will take place at Lyall Bay on Saturday, followed by short course sprint racing at the more placid Oriental Bay on Sunday.
Red Beach will be represented by one of its three women’s crews. Taking to the oars will be Daile Lambert, Lorraine Brake, Lizzie Anderson, Karlene O’Halloran and sweep Monty McGougan.
The venues for the three rounds in the New Year are Whangamata (2 January), Waihi (9 February) and Piha (23 February).
