A welcome turn in the weather enabled the annual Open Water Swim to proceed at Red Beach on Sunday 22 January.
It was the 28th year of the event and although numbers were down on previous years – 57 swimmers entered the water – it was believed that atrocious weather conditions just 24 hours earlier deterred a lot of entrants.
Swimmers had the choice of a 1.5km or 3.0km swim in generally flat conditions, however, a strong offshore wind provided a challenge for them on one leg of the journey.
Red Beach lifeguard Rachel Hare took out the 3km swim for the second consecutive year, while Axel Wohlfarth won the men’s 3km swim. Both were in the non-wetsuit division.
First home in the 1.5km swim was Red Beach’s AJ Maney.
