Silver medal won by women’s IRB crew

25th April 2021

The Red Beach U23 duo of Emma Hildesley and Brie Downey - pictured above - claimed a Silver medal at the recent BP Surf Rescue New Zealand IRB Championships at Ruakaka Beach. Competing as the Ragdolls, they placed second in the Assembly Rescue and went on to take out a fourth placing in the Mass Rescue event.

The club had three crews participating at the two-day event, all in the U23 division. Both in the men’s division, the other two crews were the Red Beach Raptors – crewed by Jonah Cleminson and Harry Mellor – and the Red Beach Rampage who were making their first appearance in the competition. The Rampage was crewed by Kees Kramer and Matt Hughes.
Competing as patients for the crews were Red Beach lifeguards Xavier Bradshaw, Lachie Nicholls, Peyton Bingley & Kayla Nicholls. Red Beach was one of 18 clubs taking part and collected 16 points.

Strong easterly winds and rain were responsible for the very testing conditions on the first day of racing at the northern beach. After a short time, racing was called off. However, fine weather prevailed on Sunday, allowing IRB officials to move through the programme and bring about its completion.
The Taranaki club of East End emerged as the overall points winner of the championships. The Sunset Beach and Waikanae clubs tied for second place.
