Red Beach Surf Club’s swimmers hit their stride at the recent SLSNZ Pool Championships.
Over three days at the National Aquatic Centre on Auckland’s North Shore (7,8,9 October), the club’s Senior and Junior swimmers amassed sufficient points to finish second overall from the 26 clubs that participated.
It's the first time that Red Beach has achieved a top-3 finish in the national pool event which was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of Covid lockdowns.
The top three placings were taken out by Mt Maunganui (179) 1, Red Beach (151) 2, and Orewa (127) 3. The club’s swimmers came away from the National Pool Champs with an impressive haul of medals …
Seniors: 19 Gold 10 Silver 10 Bronze
Juniors: 3 Gold 5 Silver 8 Bronze
Masters: 10 Gold 6 Silver 3 Bronze
Just five weeks earlier, Red Beach regained the Cosgrove Trophy at the SLSNR Pool Rescue Championships, also at the same venue, for achieving the most overall points. The club last won the trophy in 2012.
Club swimmers set two New Zealand records at the SLSNZ Pool Championships.
Jasper Cornish (top photo) had a blinder in the pool, setting an NZ U17 record in the Male 100m Manikin Tow with Fins in 56.09 secs. He finished the Nationals with 8 Gold medals, five of which came from individual events, and 3 Silver medals.
The Junior pairing of Ryan Wyatt & Dylan Blanchard (above) set an NZ record in the U13-14 Male 100m Patient Tow with Fins in 1:05.28.
